What is Acupuncture?
In acupuncture treatment, fine, sterile, single use disposable needles are inserted into appropriate acupuncture points based on an assessment. The majority of patients experience little or no discomfort. Acupuncture helps the body to self-regulate, relieving pain and restoring health.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM)
Originated in China more than 2,500 years ago. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that a vital energy or life force called qi (pronounced “chi”) circulates in the body through a system of pathways called meridians.Health is an ongoing process of maintaining balance and harmony in the circulation of qi. When there is excess or deficiency of qi or it is blocked along the meridians, pain, illness, bodily dysfunction or disease ensues.By inserting needles into specific points along these meridians, acupuncturists believe that your energy flow will re-balance to promote healing and well-being and restore balance to the body.
Medical Acupuncture
From a modern scientific perspective/Medical Acupuncture, it is understood that needling of the acupuncture points stimulates the nervous system. This causes the body to release chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain that can alleviate the pain or trigger further chemical and hormonal releases that influence the body's internal regulating system.
We use acupuncture to compliment other therapies as part of a treatment program or as a standalone therapy to treat varying Musculoskeletal conditions.
You will be required to fill out a Confidential Health History Form. Then an assessment of your condition would be performed with your consent. This involves asking about your overall Health, Observing ,Listening, Smelling, Pulse and Tongue diagnosis and palpation of sensitive areas and points.
Treatment commences once a treatment plan is discussed and Informed Consent for treatment is received. The Acupuncturist observes the pattern of signs and symptoms of a patient during an assessment that helps identify the root cause of their symptoms.
We provide acupuncture treatment for acute injuries, chronic pain and to treat varying musculoskeletal problems such as
The World Health Organization (WHO) recognizes the use of acupuncture in the treatment of:
Neurological and muscular disorders, Digestive disorders, Menstrual and reproductive problems, Urinary tract disorders, Respiratory problems, Stress and psycho-emotional problems, Addictions, Dermatological Conditions, Eyes-Ears-Nose-Throat Conditions.
The needling of acupuncture points in general is very comfortable. Many times patients are not even aware that a needle has been inserted. Certain acupuncture points are more sensitive than others due to tissue thickness and degree of blood and nerve supply present at the site.
When performed by a regulated and registered practitioner, acupuncture is very safe. Serious side effects are rare.
Acupuncture is a Regulated Health profession in Ontario.
A Registered Acupuncturist is an individual who is registered with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturists of Ontario (CTCMPAO).
